                 La Gran Via Bakery

                                                        Loly Sundae

Jessica Smiley Giordano:  On a hot and humid day, after a delicious dinner, I walked into La Gran Via Bakery (4516 5th Avenue Brooklyn NY 11220) looking for a sweet treat to cool me down. Even though I’m full, I want everything as I rub my hand over the display case to defog it. The fog is a good thing; it means I’m definitely going to find something refreshing. I gaze at the tres leches cakes. I admire the red velvet, the jello, the mousse. And suddenly, I see a handwritten note saying: Loly Sundae $3. I knew this had to come home with me.

Hiding somewhere in there is a hollowed out cupcake, submerged in tres leches stuffed with vanilla custard, topped with dulce de leche mousse. I was full but it was too pretty to sit on the table or in the fridge. You have to eat it as soon as you get it; it’s just too good. And don’t worry – you won’t go into diabetic shock. I was pleasantly surprised that although this was rich and creamy, it was not overly sugary. It was a perfect blend of flavors and textures. I’m so glad I found this.

Even sweeter than the dessert is the story behind it. It is named after the original co-owners, Mrs. Lorely Leyva. I have never had an opportunity to meet Mrs. Leyva but if I did, I would tell her she has great taste. I invite all of you to visit LgvBakery and try one of these. Or you can try their cupcakes, cakes, or cookies. And that’s not all – they also serve hot food. Whatever you’re in the mood for, you can probably find it at La Gran Via.
